Seagull Reigns Supreme Atop Rocky Coastal Outcrop

A western gull (Larus occidentalis) dominates the highest point of a dark, guano-whitened rocky sea stack, its white and grey plumage contrasting sharply against the overcast grey sky. To the right, a dark cormorant perches with wings partially raised in a classic drying pose, while additional cormorants are visible at lower positions on the rock. The scene captures a natural social hierarchy among coastal seabirds sharing a common roosting site. The rock face is dark basalt or similar volcanic rock, heavily streaked with white guano indicating long-term use as a bird colony. The flat, diffuse lighting from the overcast conditions, combined with the long telephoto compression, gives the image a moody, remote coastal atmosphere.
