A white western gull commands the highest point of a dark, jagged sea stack, surrounded by several darker cormorants perched at lower positions on the rock. The rock face is streaked with white guano, indicating heavy seabird use as a regular roosting site. The overcast, flat grey sky creates a moody, diffused lighting environment typical of the Pacific Coast. One cormorant on the right appears to have its wings partially spread in a characteristic drying posture. The telephoto compression of the Canon RF100-500mm lens brings the distant birds into sharp relief against the foggy sky, capturing intimate behavioral details from what must have been considerable distance.
