Cliff Swallows Tending to Their Mud Nests
Sunday, April 26th, 2026 at 10:46:33 PM · 2026/Yolo Bypass Wetlands
This photograph captures a colony of cliff swallows actively engaged with their gourd-shaped mud nests attached to the underside of what appears to be a building overhang or bridge structure. Multiple nests are visible, constructed from pellets of mud in the characteristic textured pattern of cliff swallow architecture. One bird is captured mid-flight with wings spread, approaching the nests, while others are perched at nest entrances. The image shows the remarkable engineering of these colonial nesters, with their nests clustered together on the wooden beams and support structure.
