Spider Web Shroud Over Forest Floor Debris
Saturday, May 30th, 2026 at 2:44:27 PM · 2026/Mt Diablo Camping - Juniper Canyon
A close-up ground-level photograph reveals a large, flat sheet web blanketing the rocky, reddish-brown soil of a dry California woodland floor. Dead oak leaves, dry grass stalks, and small pebbles are trapped beneath and within the gossamer silk, which is dusted with fine soil particles giving it a frosted, bluish-gray appearance. A dark burrow or funnel entrance is visible near the upper center of the web, suggesting this is a funnel weaver spider's retreat. The setting is arid and chaparral-like, consistent with the Mt. Diablo State Park environment in late spring. The image has a slightly melancholic, end-of-season mood accentuated by the muted earth tones and delicate, almost ephemeral web structure.
