NGC 7023 — The Iris Nebula in Cepheus

This astrophotograph showcases NGC 7023, commonly known as the Iris Nebula, located approximately 1,300 light-years away in the constellation Cepheus. At the heart of the image, a brilliant blue-white reflection nebula glows intensely, illuminated by the hot central star HD 200775, which scatters blue light off surrounding dust clouds. Dark nebulae form dramatic, wispy tendrils curling around the bright core, creating a striking contrast against the deep black of space and the rich star field behind it. The image captures the interplay between the bright reflection region and the surrounding dark molecular cloud, LDN 1172, which absorbs background starlight and adds depth and texture to the scene. Taken in September 2026 with a ZWO Seestar smart telescope, this image beautifully renders the delicate structure and ethereal blue glow that gives the nebula its floral nickname.
