This upward-looking (zenith-facing) long-exposure night photograph captures a star-filled sky framed by the silhouetted and moonlit canopies of pine and fir trees at Mt. Lassen Volcanic National Park. The trees, illuminated by warm moonlight from the upper right, display rich amber and russet tones against the deep blue-gray night sky. A faint meteor or satellite streak is visible diagonally across the upper-center portion of the frame. The moon, though out of frame, casts a soft glow in the upper right, washing out some stars in that region while leaving the darker portions of the sky richly populated with stars. The overall composition creates a natural cathedral effect, with the trees acting as pillars framing the cosmic ceiling above.
