Sagittarius Galactic Core and the Great Rift
Sunday, June 14th, 2026 at 4:39:39 AM · 2026/Astrophotography
This deep-sky astrophotograph reveals the breathtaking Sagittarius galactic-core region of the summer Milky Way, showcasing an extraordinary concentration of stars interwoven with the dramatic dark nebulae of the Great Rift, also known as the Pipe or Dark Horse Nebula. The image captures vast star clouds glowing in warm amber and golden tones, sharply contrasted against the dark, dusty lanes of intervening interstellar gas and dust that obscure the galactic center beyond. The Great Rift's silhouetted tendrils create intricate, winding patterns across the stellar backdrop, giving the composition a painterly, almost tactile depth. Captured with a Canon EOS R6 Mark II at 200mm, this 10-minute total integration (46 frames at 13 seconds each, ISO 3200) resolves remarkable detail across a ~10.3 x 6.9 degree field of view. Post-processing via Siril stacking, GraXpert gradient removal, and custom Python pipeline brings out the full tonal range from the brightest star clusters to the darkest nebular voids.
