Raven Perched Regally on Ancient Oak Branch

A large common raven (Corvus corax) perches confidently on a lichen-encrusted oak branch against a clear pale blue sky at Mt. Diablo State Park in California. The bird's entirely jet-black plumage shows subtle iridescent sheen variations in the bright midday sunlight, with ruffled feathers adding texture and dimension to its imposing silhouette. The raven gazes alertly to the left, its intelligent eye catching a small highlight, while its heavy curved bill and shaggy throat feathers are characteristic of the species.
