Camouflaged Octopus Hiding in Shallow Tide Pool
Saturday, July 18th, 2026 at 3:18:27 PM · 2026/Schoolhouse Beach Tide Pools
This photograph captures a remarkably well-camouflaged octopus resting on a pebble and rock-strewn bottom of a shallow tide pool, viewed through the rippling water surface. The octopus has adopted the mottled brown, tan, and reddish hues of the surrounding substrate, making it extremely difficult to distinguish from its environment. Brown kelp or seaweed fronds are visible along the right edge of the frame, adding to the intertidal habitat context. The water surface creates a dappled light pattern across the scene, with caustic light refractions dancing across the bottom. The overall composition conveys the remarkable cryptic abilities of cephalopods and the rich biodiversity found within rocky intertidal zones.
