Milky Way Rises Over Lassen Volcanic Night Sky
Monday, May 25th, 2026 at 8:35:50 AM · 2026/Mt Lassen Volcanic National Park
This wide-field astrophotography image captures the Milky Way galaxy's core band sweeping diagonally across the frame above Mt. Lassen Volcanic National Park, a designated dark sky area in Northern California. A bright meteor streak is clearly visible in the upper-left portion of the frame, adding a dramatic and lucky element to the composition. The galactic dust lanes and star clouds of the Milky Way are rendered with impressive detail, showing subtle gradients of grey and faint green airglow against the deep black sky. Thousands of individual stars are visible across the entire frame, with the densest concentration aligned with the galactic band. The image was captured with a Canon EOS R6 Mark II and a fast RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens, enabling excellent light gathering during a long exposure.
