Solar Surge Prominence and Jet Over Sun's Limb
Sunday, July 5th, 2026 at 6:23:39 PM · 2026/Astrophotography
This exceptional hydrogen-alpha solar photograph captures the Sun's upper limb in stunning detail, prominently featuring a surge prominence and solar jet erupting dramatically above the chromosphere on July 5, 2026 at 11:23 PT. The surge prominence on the left side of the frame displays characteristic spiky, upward-streaming plasma threads reaching high into the corona, while a secondary smaller jet is visible near the right limb. The solar surface (chromosphere) reveals an intricate texture of spicules and fibrils — the fibrous, grain-like patterns that characterize the Sun's dynamic outer atmosphere in H-alpha light. The warm amber-orange tonal palette is characteristic of hydrogen-alpha narrowband imaging, which isolates the 656.28nm emission line to reveal chromospheric detail invisible to the naked eye. The image was captured using a Lunt LS60THa dedicated solar telescope paired with a ZWO ASI585MM monochrome camera, representing high-quality amateur solar astrophotography.
