Milky Way Arches Over Lassen Volcanic Wilderness
Monday, May 25th, 2026 at 8:40:20 AM · 2026/Mt Lassen Volcanic National Park
This wide-field astrophotography image captures the Milky Way galaxy band stretching diagonally across a deeply dark night sky above Mt. Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California. The galactic core region is subtly visible as a diffuse, slightly brighter band of nebulosity and star clusters running from left to right through the center of the frame. Thousands of individual stars are scattered across the image, with the darkest regions of the park providing exceptional transparency and minimal light pollution. The image has a moody, contemplative quality enhanced by the near-total darkness and the soft, cloud-like texture of the Milky Way's star-forming regions. Shot with a Canon EOS R6 Mark II and the RF 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens, the photograph demonstrates the capable high-ISO performance of the mirrorless system.
