Milky Way Arcs Over Lassen Volcanic Night Sky
Monday, May 25th, 2026 at 8:48:50 AM · 2026/Mt Lassen Volcanic National Park
This long-exposure astrophotography image captures the Milky Way galaxy's core band sweeping diagonally across an exceptionally dark night sky above Mt. Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California. Thousands of individual stars are resolved across the frame, with the diffuse, luminous band of the galactic plane clearly visible as a dense concentration of stars and interstellar dust clouds creating light and dark nebulae. The image has a predominantly deep, cool-toned darkness with the galaxy's core glowing softly in shades of grey-white, hinting at the immense stellar density within. A faint streak near the upper left edge of the frame may indicate a satellite trail or meteor captured during the exposure. The dark skies of the remote national park allowed for excellent transparency, revealing remarkable detail in the Milky Way structure.
